Thanksgiving Morning: Reflections, Prep, and Last-Minute Magic

HOME By Christy Brewer Anderson Begin Thanksgiving morning with gratitude, a few quick table tips, and fresh inspiration for making today special. There’s still time to add a little extra magic to your holiday moments.

    A Season for Reflection

As autumn deepens and the world outside turns all the beautiful colors, Thanksgiving morning invites us not just to feast, but to reflect on all the things we have to be thankful for. It feels good to just pause and give thanks for the journey, even the tough parts of it. We celebrate new connections with our community and honor the many milestones that we’ve achieved together. This year, let’s delve into what truly nourishes us beyond the physical and into the heart of what makes our lives rich with meaning.

Last Thanksgiving Was a Lesson in True Gratitude

Last Thanksgiving was unlike any other in our family’s history. My husband was recovering from a dirt bike accident that left him hospitalized. Our Thanksgiving Day was spent coming home, not to the expected aromas of a holiday meal coming together, but to a spread of thoughtfully prepared casseroles and kindness bestowed on us by our neighbors.

The meal was simple, eaten on paper plates, and the setting humble, but the gratitude we felt in our hearts was immeasurable. Our children, who were cared for by friends with hearts of gold and the purest of intentions, reminded us of the essence of what family really means. It’s not just about blood, but about bonds chosen in the heart. That day, we learned that Thanksgiving is not only about food; it’s also about health, community, and the love that surrounds us, lifting us up when we least expected it.

    Family Milestones

This year has been full of so many amazing milestones for our family, and I am grateful for each and every one of them. Here are just a few of the highlights of our year:

    • Laguna Happy’s Debut: More than just a website, it’s a space for stories, a place where our journey meets the journeys of others, fostering a community of shared experiences.

    • My Daughter’s College Adventure: Her weekends at home are like mini Christmases, reinforcing the mindset that home is where your heart is, no matter how far you roam. Her tales of independence and growth fill us with so much pride.

    • My Son’s Basketball Journey: From dreaming of the court to making pivotal plays, each game is a lesson in staying the course and pursuing one’s dreams. It teaches resilience, teamwork, and the joy found in the pursuit of passion. His journey is a reminder that dreams, when pursued, can manifest into reality.

    • Stepdaughter’s Milestones: Her first car, her first job—these markers of her journey into adulthood are celebrations of growth and independence.

    • Stepson’s Mechanical Wizardry: His curiosity and skill with machines aren’t just about fixing things; they’re about fixing, building, and understanding our world. His projects bring us together, teaching patience, creativity, and the value of hands-on learning.

    • Family Health and Recovery: My husband’s recovery from his accident is a milestone of wellness for us all, a testament to resilience, care, and the power of community support.

    • Personal Growth Projects: Like my own journey into writing, where each word penned is a step towards personal fulfillment, dreaming of and going after my passions, giving it my all.

    The Neighborhood Feast

In the absence of nearby kin, our neighbors have become our chosen family. The impromptu gathering last Thanksgiving became our new tradition, so, this year, we’re setting more plates. There’s something truly special about the camaraderie of neighbors coming together, each bringing a dish, a story, or a smile, turning our home into a sanctuary of communal warmth. It’s a reminder that community is the extended family we choose every day, and this connection is as nourishing as any meal.

    The Thanksgiving Table

Now, let’s talk turkey... and everything else that makes our Thanksgiving table special. It’s all about setting the tone for a warm and inviting environment where everyone feels at home.

    • Healthy Joy in Every Bite: This year, I am focusing on health and adding a special touch to every dish I prepare with, whole organic foods, plenty of colorful vegetables, and naturally sweetened desserts with honey or maple syrup.

    • Take Time Selecting the Best Candles: Nicely scented candles instantly create a warm and inviting space. Look for soy candles or some made with essential oils to avoid breathing in harsh chemicals emitted by most commercial options.

    • Natural Elements Make Great Décor: Use some fresh herbs or greenery such as rosemary, which not only looks nice but smells amazing when you give it a little rub.

    • Instantly Elevate with Cloth Linens: When possible, opt for cloth napkins, linens, and tablecloths. They add an extra layer of class and comfort.

    • Create Fun Kids Crafts: Simple but engaging crafts for the kids such as salt dough leaf imprints or personalized place cards are a terrific way to get them involved while giving them a chance to show off their creativity. Plus, you’ll have a special keepsake to add to next year’s festivities.

    The Joy of Shared Meals

Something magical unfolds at a shared meal. It’s not just about the flavors on the plate but the shared experience and the connection that is formed over a plate of food. Laughter over dessert, stories woven around the table, and those quiet moments of gratitude when hands clasp in thanks. These are the memories that linger, long after the dishes are done. It’s about celebrating life, being present, and acknowledging the beauty in the ordinary. Each shared meal is an opportunity to live in the moment, to connect, to laugh, and sometimes, to heal.

    Gratitude in Every Moment

Here’s an expanded checklist for you, to bring that Thanksgiving spirit into every day:

    • Count Your Blessings: Make it a daily habit. Write them down or share them at the table. Gratitude isn’t seasonal; it’s a daily practice.

    • Connect Deeply: Listen to those around you. Engage in conversations that matter, that connect. The depth of our relationships is often found in the quiet moments.

    • Celebrate the Simple: Find joy in the mundane. The first snow, a child’s laughter, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, the simple joys that enrich our lives.

    • Open Your Table: Invite someone new or someone who might be alone. There’s always room for one more. Extend your sanctuary to others, share your space, your time, your life.

    • Reflect on Growth: Take time to acknowledge your personal milestones. Growth is a journey, and every step deserves recognition.

    • Foster Community: Engage with your community, not just on holidays. Help where you can, and let others help you. Community is our extended family.

Thanksgiving morning isn’t confined to a single day; it’s a way of life. Let’s make every day a little bit like Thanksgiving, where every meal shared is a moment to remember, every milestone a reason to celebrate, and every day an opportunity to live with intention. Here’s to a life filled with gratitude, where we find beauty in the ordinary and joy in every shared moment. Happy Thanksgiving, from my family to yours!
